Halo: Campaign Evolved officially releases on July 28, 2026. The upcoming remake of 2001’s Xbox flagship Halo: Combat Evolved, is launching on XBOX, PS5, and PC as the first game in the series to be made on Unreal Engine 5.
Following a new trailer during the XBOX Games Showcase on Sunday, it appears that the remake’s additional three prequel missions are teasing a major lore retcon for both Halo 4 and 5.
While this won’t be confirmed until the game releases next month, the missions—which tasks a Mark IV-clad Master Chief and an Orion-wearing Sergeant Johnson with infiltrating a Covenant ship—has a major impact on the series’ lore.
In the trailer, alongside classic Covenant designs, one shot shows a Halo 4 and Halo 5-style Elite resting in some kind of organic pod. In the first two 343-era games, the Covenant races saw a major redesign with Elites, Jackals, and Grunts looking significantly different from the Bungie games.
Since then, these redesigns have been explained away in the games’ lore with the Halo 4 and Halo 5 enemies having different phenotypes. However, Campaign Evolved’s recent trailer appears to retcon these controversial redesigns as biological experiments by a specific member of the Covenant.

At the time of writing, it’s not known if players will have the opportunity to fight these particualr forms of the Elites in Halo: Campaign Evolved or if they are merely set-dressing. After all, modelling a new, high-quality version of the Reclaimer-era Sangheili is one thing, but creating new animations is another.
Halo: Campaign Evolved’s three new prequel missions have been penned by veteran Halo novel writer Troy Denning. The writer behind a number of stories, including Shadows of Reach and Oblivion, Denning has spent years writing Master Chief focused stories across multiple eras of the franchise and he seems to be tying it all together with this upcoming story.
Of course, we will have to wait until the end of July to find out exactly what ramifications this new retcon will have on the Halo franchise as a whole. However, it could mean that future games in the series—such as the upcoming Halo 7—could include multiple variants of Covenant. (Although, that might not go over all that well with fans.)
