Arrowhead Game Studios confirms a new wave of tech improvements coming to Helldivers 2 as part of its ‘Optimising Liberty’ initiative.
While the studio works on major progression improvements, which fans should see this Summer, the Helldivers 2 team has announced a fleet of new additions on all platforms. Releasing on May 27, 2026, the Optimising Liberty update includes a number of additions for PC, Xbox and PlayStation.
First and foremost, Helldivers 2 is finally implementing official upscaling support, allowing for the use of FSR, DLSS, and XeSS. On PC, players will have the option to use FSR 4.03, DLSS 4.5, FSR 3.1.5, and XeSS 3.0.
Upscaling is also being added to the game’s console version. On Xbox and base PS5, players will have access to FSR 3.1 upscaling. On PS5 Pro, PSSR 1 support will be added, although players will also be able to inject PSSR 2 in their system settings.
Furthermore, the new patch will introduce dynamic resolution scaling on all platforms, including PC. This allows the game to dynamically lower resolution in GPU-heavy scenes to stick to your target performance cap.
Additionally, Helldivers 2 players will be able to make use of Variable Rate Shading as well. Similar to DRS, this tech dynamically reducing shading in harder-to-see areas of the screen. By doing this, the game will lower GPU load, allowing intense scenes to run smoother. On PlayStation 5, the game will also see the addition of VRR support, which was already present on PC and Xbox.
Finally, for this May 27th update, PC players will finally be able to make use of both Nvidia Reflex and AMD Anti-Lag 2. These technologies help to lower latency at the GPU level, which should make the game feel smoother to play.
While all of this is good, Arrowhead also confirmed that this new patch is part of an ongoing effort to improve its game. “We’re not stopping there, Helldivers,” they announced. “This is just the opening salvo in an ongoing campaign to improve performance across the fleet.”
Arrowhead confirmed that they are working alongside Nixxes, the studio that helped reduce the game’s file size from 150GB to just 23GB for further improvements. Additionally, the studio is working on major under-the-hood engine improvements that should help to make Helldivers 2 better performing and better looking in the future.
Helldivers 2 has seen a tumultuous path since release with more controversies than we can count. Just recently, the game saw another round of review bombing after months of promised changes that never came.
