Helldivers 2 is on a winning streak. Following the game’s months of massive patches, Arrowhead game studios is restarting regular content releases, and have successfully shrunk the game’s install size from 150GB to just 23GB.
Alongside the game’s massive improvements, the Helldivers brand is jumping up in pedigree with an official movie adaptation in the works by Fast and Furious and Star Trek: Beyond director Justin Lin.
A recent report by The Hollywood Reporter has claimed that the film director is “not a gamer and leaned into that as a strength while pitching his take on the material”, which has caused some ire amongst the game’s fanbase. However, Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani has told fans to “trust” the director.
Speaking on the official Helldivers 2 Discord server, Jorjani told fans to “let Justin Lin work his magic”. In a later response to a fan asking Arrowhead to “make sure the director plays the game at least once”, the CEO said that he trusts the director due to his prior work.
“I trust Justin,” Jorjani told fans on the Discord server. “He did a great job on the Star Trek movie.”
While Arrowhead may be the creators of the Helldivers universe, the studio has explained in the past that they “don’t, and shouldn’t, have final say” on what the movie will be like. There is hope that the film will be a faithful representation of the game—which is essentially an even more over-the-top Starship Troopers—but the studio is only slightly involved in the project for now.
“The short answer is yes. The long answer is that we’ll see,” revealed game director Johan Pilestedt when asked about their involvement in the film. “We are not Hollywood people, and we don’t know what it takes to make a movie.”
While Justin Lin is behind directorial duties of the Helldivers movie, the film’s script has been penned by It, Annabelle and Swamp Thing writer Gary Dauberman. Few other details surrounding the film have been confirmed. There is no current release date for the Helldivers movie.
