Following decades of making stealth-action games with Metal Gear Solid, Hideo Kojima’s upcoming spiritual successor Physint has been described as an easy project for the iconic game developer.
In development at Kojima Productions alongside upcoming Xbox-backed horror game OD, Kojima’s upcoming espionage game is still at least half-a-decade away. However, the creator believes that, due to his past of making stealth games, it will have a very easy development compared to other titles.
“As for Physint, because it’s an espionage game, I could practically make it in my sleep,” Kojima told Japanese outlet Ananweb. “For example – you have a soldier who infiltrates, gets stopped by the enemy, gets attacked, and sneaks around to take them out one by one. No matter how that plays out, it’s fun and easy to make.”
In comparison, upcoming horror game OD, which is being made in collaboration with Jordan Peele, is a much more challenging affair for the creator. Not only is the game attempting to blend game with film, but it will also adapt a number of unique experiences into one “service” style product.
“I can’t say exactly what it is yet, nor do I know if it will work out,” he said (thanks, Automaton). “We’ve created stealth games and delivery games which were unlike anything before, but system-wise, they were similar to other games.
“This time, we’re trying to change the service model from the ground up, so it should be quite challenging. We’ve packed the trailer full of hints, so if you keep thinking about it, you might figure it out.”
Kojima explained that OD “introduces new gimmicks” as well as “crossing the line between film and games”, and it’s a hard project to grasp for anyone outside of the studio. “I’m thinking of working not just with film actors but with film staff on the production side too, though I wonder how that will all turn out,” he continued.
The iconic game director also explained that the game might end up being out-of-date by the time it actually arrives due to the constantly shifting state of the world. While Kojima didn’t say outright what the themes of OD actually are, they did state that there are plenty of hints in the game’s latest trailer.
“Right now the times are changing so quickly that the social structures and themes I’m trying to depict in the game might end up appearing in the real world before the game is finished,” Kojima explained.
Hideo Kojima is no longer working on Konami’s Metal Gear Solid series, but more games in the series are planned to release. While the team behind the recent Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater have not decided their next project, Konami has spent years training the next generation of MGS devs to develop more games in the series.
