As far as hero shooters go, Marvel Rivals is absolutely stacked with 48 characters to pick from at the time of writing. With new characters constantly coming to the game, such as the leaked upcoming Devil Dinosaur, many have wondered whether the team has an internal limit for how many characters the game can support.
As it turns out, we now have an answer: no. While NetEase continues work on the game’s leaked next three seasons, the studio has promised that it will not be slowing down on the addition of new heroes to the multiplayer game.
Game director GuangGuang said in an interview with IGN that the game’s current slew of heroes is “not a very huge number” adding that “we can handle it”. This was backed by executive producer Danny Koo who said, “I don’t think heroes will be a problem”.
“It’s more about UI optimisation,” the producer added. As the team continues to add new heroes and villains to the game over the years, the game’s UI may have to change to allow players to easily find characters they want to play as.
“Certainly, we’ll work together on how we present that to the players,” Koo said. “But I run the live-service side of Marvel games. We have games [that have] over 200-300 characters, and it’s not going to slow down.”
As Marvel Rivals continues prep for its biggest year ever, Koo explained that the goal with new heroes going forward is “to introduce different play mechanics” instead of having characters feel too similar to each other. “If we have five shooting guns like Punisher, then it’ll be less exciting than someone that does something completely different,” he said.
Additionally, the team confirmed that they will not be introducing original characters to Marvel Rivals as the game continues to expand. Instead, every character will be pulled from a comic book or other Marvel property as the team has hundreds, if not thousands, of characters to pull from.
“We have so many [existing characters] right now,” Koo said. “It’s not the time.” They later added: “We have so many characters in Marvel, [we’re] not looking at outside of Marvel. We do have collaborations with other Marvel games, let’s say. At this point, we have so much content.”
