Following the release of Marvel and Sony’s latest MCU flick Spider-Man: Brand New Day, the entire world has Spidey fever. As the new movie’s box office crosses a billion-and-a-half, fans are jumping into the webhead’s latest video game release: Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

Released in 2023, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 already sold over 17 million copies on PS5 with an expected extra million on PC. However, as Brand New Day’s release continues to hype up Spidey fans across the world, many are jumping into the open world superhero game for the first time.

According to video game analyst Rhys Elliot a Alinea Analytics, Spider-Man 2 has sold 316,000 copies since the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Across PC and PS5, the superhero game has managed to rake in $11 million just off the back of the film’s popularity. 20% of the new game sales are physical. However, this data doesn’t include players on PS5 who have purchased a pre-owned physical copy which likely brings the total amount of new players even higher.

These are already impressive sales for a three-year-old game. Furthermore, Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is available on PlayStation Plus Extra, Sony’s own video game subscription service. For now, there’s no additional information on how the game is currently performing via this metric, but it’s assumed that many gamers are simply subscribing to the online platform to get their web-slinging fix.

The analyst expects the sales spike to be caused not only by the gargantuan success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, but also the well-timed discounts PlayStation provided for its digital copy. Additionally, the game also saw the addition of free Brand New Day cosmetics which may have brought in even more players.

Elliot states that the new sales figures of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 now sits at around 18.2 million copies with 92% of those sales on PlayStation 5. While the sequel may not be as critically successful as its predecessor, the game has proven to be a huge sales success, despite its massive budget.

Right now, there is no word on when fans can expect Insomniac Games to release Marvel’s Spider-Man 3. However, later this year, the studio is releasing its exceptionally violent Marvel’s Wolverine, a third-person, level-based hack-and-slash game. That game releases on September 15th.
