FromSoftware’s Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition has been indefinitely delayed with the game now maintaining a vague “2026” release date. Prior to the delay, the Switch 2 version of open-world Soulsborne title suffered from poor image quality and horrid framerates, but it seems that things are steadily improving behind-the-scenes.
It’s been months since any gameplay of the Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Elden Ring has popped up. In fact, the main game’s multiplayer spin-off Elden Ring: Nightreign has released its first DLC in that time.
However, publisher Bandai Namco recently showed off the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game at Milan Games Week last week. Gameplay footage of the new build was captured by YouTuber Corey Da Flame who shared over eight-minutes of new footage online.
Judging from the video, performance of the game seems drastically improved with sharper image quality to boot. While there are still noticeable stutters and drops, FromSoftware’s game suffers from performance instability on all platforms with even powerful PCs suffering from hitching and large framerate drops.
Nevertheless, the game does look much improved on Nintendo Switch 2 compared to previous showings. In fact, the video even shows a full boss fight against Margit, the Fell Omen, which runs very consistently compared to earlier builds of the game running on Nintendo Switch 2.
Without a release date, it seems that Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition still has some time in development with developer FromSoftware likely still able to make additional optimisation tweaks before launch.
This is not the only Nintendo Switch 2 release to be shown in an unflattering light before launch. In fact, Ubisoft’s Star Wars Outlaws, which is now seen as the pinnacle of Nintendo Switch 2 performance, was seen running at extremely low levels of performance before release. However, following months of optimisations, that game ran very well on Nintendo’s new handheld.
While Elden Ring: Tarnished Edition is primarily pitched as a Nintendo Switch 2 release, the upcoming upgrade is coming to other platforms as a DLC pack that will add new classes, including the Heavy Knight, new armour sets and more.
