Another day, another incredible mod from the Baldur’s Gate community, this time adding a whole new race to Larian’s masterpiece. Enter the ‘Tritons’, a brand new sea-faring species complete with unique abilities, now playable thanks to a new, ambitious mod.

The ‘Stewards of the Sea – Playable Tritons‘, which as you’d expect is on Nexus Mods, lets you play through the game as one of these stunning creatures from the depths. The description reveals the Tritons originally came from the Elemental Plane of Water but then spread across the Material Plane to protect the surface ‘from terrors of the deep’.

Tritons were first-added to Dungeons and Dragons in the 1975 Eldritch Wizardry rules supplement book Greyhawk for the Original Edition of the tabletop game. While the Original Edition was quite small and limited, this book added a number of additional races including the sea-faring Tritons.

As you’d expect, Triton boast webbed hands and fins on the calves, with fin-like ears on their head. The race supports all four of the game’s body types, as well as tinting, so there is plenty of customization.

But this isn’t just an aesthetic mod. The creator, Tepkunset, has gone even further by adding a number of elements that affect gameplay. For example, your character will be considered an ‘outsider’ to Baldur’s Gate, and as such, be treated as a rarity. Quirky features such as Darkvision, allowing the player to see in the dark up to distances of 40ft, also give you yet another incentive to dive into Baldur’s Gate 3 one more time. As per the dedicated Nexus page, we’ve listed the full abilities below.

  • Guardian of the Depths – Adapted to the frigid ocean depths, you have Resistance to Cold damage, and your Movement Speed is unimpeded by Deep Water.
  • Darkvision – You can see in the dark up to 12โ€ฏm / 40โ€ฏft.
  • Control Air and Water – Starting at 1st level, you can cast Fog Cloud with this trait. Starting at 3rd level, you can cast Gust of Wind with this trait. Starting at 5th level, you can cast Water Whip with it (no damage, just effect). Once you cast any of these spells with this trait, you canโ€™t cast that spell with it again until you finish a long rest.
  • Dialogue – Your character will be an outsider to Baldur’s Gate. Your character will be treated as a rarity.

It’s been a strong start to September in the BG3 modding world. Earlier this month, gamers were treated to a mod that restored what appeared to be more than 70 lines of ‘hidden dialogue’. The Lesser Restoration mod, which can be snapped up now on Nexus Mods, adds 70 party banters โ€“ spontaneous interactions that happen between your companion characters when not in direct dialogue โ€“ that never made the final game.

While Baldur’s Gate 3 does boast a large representation of the Dungeons and Dragons tabletop game, it is still limited in comparison to the sheer scope of the physical RPG. Even so, fans have taken it upon themselves to add even more races to Larian’s adaptation.
