With less than two weeks until the Arc Raiders Riven Tides update, Embark has announced a controversial change. At the center of the controversy is a fundamental redesign of how Expeditions work. Previously, the system revolved around long-term planning and strategy, but that is about to change in late April.

The upcoming update flips the formula, replacing a slow progression system with a five-day challenge. On top of this, the Expedition window is now tied to a performance-based objective, which involves dealing damage. The previous three-million stash value objective is no longer required.

“We want Expeditions to be fun and not an endless grind,” Embark wrote in the announcement. “We believe these changes create a fair and engaging challenge that keeps everyone active across the full 5 days,” the developer added. However, the community strongly disagrees. With a tighter timeframe and added FOMO, this change will likely result in a stressful grind.

The Expedition change in Arc Raiders will likely cause even more grind

The upcoming Arc Raiders change affects both casual and dedicated players. Casual players are effectively locked out of the system due to the time limit. Players have five days to complete the challenge, from Tuesday to Sunday, which is not ideal for those who can’t play every single day. As the new system revolves around damage, it will likely result in more PvP combat, which is another significant change.

Even the most dedicated players are unhappy with the Arc Raiders change, as it removes long-term planning that previously defined Expeditions. With this update, a core gameplay loop shifts from a marathon into a sprint.

In general, the community believes that adding a damage objective is fine, but tying the challenge to a five-day window is far from okay. With time-gated battle passes, limited-time quests, and similar systems, the gaming industry has increasingly leaned into FOMO-driven design. Unfortunately, Arc Raiders appears to be following the same trend.

In addition to the frustration about the time limit, many players are not satisfied with the rewards, which may not be worth the sacrifice and the grind. On top of that, the update effectively invalidates previous grinding efforts. Players who previously spent weeks farming currency now find that their effort is far less relevant under the new change.

Arc Raiders is a live-service game built around progression, and announcing this drastic change shortly before a massive update erodes trust in the developers. Ultimately, Embark is trying to balance long-term extraction gameplay with short-term challenges, causing the two systems to crash.

With community frustration rising and Epic Games developing a competing extraction title, Embark could face serious pressure. However, the developers will likely address these concerns and potentially adjust some aspects based on feedback.
