As with any video game released in the last decade, Arc Raiders has a number of unlockable and premium cosmetics to nab to customise your character. While you can also customise your handy rooster, Scrappy, Embark will not be adding any cosmetics that break the “lore” of the game.
In the past, Embark has been very loose with its use of cosmetics in its prior title, The Finals. While anything is possible in The Finals due to its setting of a fictional VR combat game show in the year 2100 AD, it makes sense that players can look like anything they desire. However, as a more grounded game, Arc Raiders won’t let you dress ballerinas, aliens, or a big frog.
Speaking to IGN in a recent interview, Embark CEO Patrick Soderland confirmed that the studio won’t be forcing in cosmetics that don’t fit within the universe of Arc Raiders. As a sci-fi game, there’s a lot that can be done with the extraction shooter, but skins must make sense within its world.
“First and foremost, we want to make sure that everything fits the fiction of Arc Raiders, and that it’s something that sits well within the Arc Raiders universe,” Söderlund said. “I mean, there are other games, very successful games out there–The Finals being one of them–in which the IP is designed so it basically happens to be very elastic.”
Soderland explained that “Arc Raiders has a more curated lore, curated world, so we have to stick within boundaries to a slightly different extent.” The CEO explained that, unlike Fortnite, Arc Raiders will never be a game where “Batman can shoot Bart Simpson”. However, that doesn’t mean that Embark can’t have fun with new designs.
The CEO explained that, as the game continues, some designs will be more “on the fringe of what the lore and IP can tolerate” while not breaking down the grounded nature of Arc Raiders’ world. While some fans will always be split on what cosmetics make sense and what don’t (hey, I’m a Halo fan, I have a lot to say about cosmetics), the goal is to never upset the entire fanbase.
“We will probably have a slightly segregated user base when it comes to what they like, but that’s probably fine given that they’re cosmetics,” the CEO continued. “That’s probably how it should be. So, yeah. That’s kind of where we are.”
At the time of publication, Arc Raiders has only been out for a few months, and the game has already made over six times its budget back as over 12 million players jump into the extraction shooter.
Across 2026, Embark is looking to add multiple maps to Arc Raiders alongside new items, enemies, and more to the game. Right now, the studio has only confirmed the contents of updates up until April with more to be revealed at a later date.
