EA’s Battlefield 6 is out right now, and it’s doing incredible numbers. With epic destruction, a toned-down player count and some of the most satisfying gunplay I’ve personally played in years, it’s a killer multiplayer game, but there a number of issues.
One of the game’s major issues right now, outside of the game’s annoying UI, is the Custom Search feature. The feature, which allows players to select what game modes they want to play, feels broken with many players finding themselves in game types they didn’t select.
As it turns out, the custom search feature isn’t broken, but is instead more of a suggestion to the game to make sure that players find matches quickly instead of waiting around. Shortly after launch, lobal community manager Kevin Johnson said that the feature was “by design” with the custom search quickly expanding “the scope of its search… to find the next available match with other alternatives”.
“It does this to ensure you’re playing more quickly rather than waiting on a long timer [to find games],” the community manager told fans on social media.
In response to fans, Battlefield 6 producer Alexia Christofi asked fans if they would want or use a button that would tell the game that they’re “happy to wait” to get the exact type of game they want. This would mean that as well as telling the game what modes you want to play, you would have to flag that you want to wait for those modes… which is what many would assume tagging the game mode they want is for.
“It’s something we’ve definitely discussed internally,” Christofi told fans. “it’s a tough balance between finding people a game without waiting too long and getting them exactly what they want, but if we could offer players the choice Id be happy.”

Of course, this is only a problem due to how the game type function works anyway, prioritising getting players into any match instead of the match they want. Additionally, this wouldn’t be an issue with the introduction of an in-game server browser outside of the game’s Labs modes but, for some reason, DICE simply isn’t adding that.
Really, there shouldn’t be a menu for choosing specific game modes if Battlefield 6 is simply going to disregard your choices for the sake of higher player engagement anyway. While not nearly as popular, Halo Infinite doesn’t suddenly chuck players into slayer for queueing up for a less popular game mode, because they’ve already decided to queue up for that game mode.
While this is an extremely annoying issue for players who want to experience more than just Rush or Conquest, Battlefield 6 is still an incredibly fun game. Coming off the dregs of 2042, the series is back on track as one of the most fun FPS games around, but its matchmaking does need to listen to what players want, and not scrambling to increase player retention.
