The modders behind Baldur’s Gate 3’s largest-ever mod have given a much-awaited update on progress – explaining why they’ve been so quiet. In a post on the Path to Menzoberranzan Discord, the community lead reassured fans following the ambitious project that the silence ‘was for good reason’ and that the team has been hard at work behind the scenes.
The team, which kicked off their plans a year ago, are building an entire custom campaign in Larian’s much-loved game. The team lead revealed that the summer was used to ‘tighten up’ production as the project grew in ambition.
“We promise the silence has been for a very good reason,” they wrote. “The past few months have been wild: what started as a rebuild of one area of Baldur’s Gate II has grown into a full-scale campaign. That leap has meant re-thinking a lot of our processes, from how we collaborate to how we build content. Our summer was spent tightening up our production pipeline so we can deliver something truly special!”
Having previously spoken to some of the team members involved in the project, it’s safe to say they’re not short of talent. Since starting, the project now has more than 1000 followers on Patreon and 6000 members of the official Discord. Earlier in the year, the team revealed they were looking for voice actors, and were inundated with applications. Now, as production begins to ramp, the team is looking for more members to join – specifically with game design experience.
“We’re opening up Programmer, User Experience, and Design applications!,” the post reads. “If you’ve got the skillset for these roles, we encourage you to apply!”
While no date has been set yet, the PTM modders stated earlier in the year that a demo would launch ahead of the full mod release. However, as they’re still looking to bolster key game design roles it could be some while longer before we’re able to experience PTM in some capacity.
When the custom Baldur’s Gate 3 campaign does release, the story will feature a huge cast of new party members with their own personalities and full voice acting.
โOne thing that Iโm excited about the game that Iโd love to share is that weโre going to have around six to eight completely unique and original custom companions, which I am super excited about,โ ย lead writer Thomas Loughlin explained.
While Larian is not involved directly in the project, they are still releasing updates to address player feedback, including a native Steam Deck version of the beloved RPG. Elsewhere, Larian Boss Swen Vincke recently appeared to respond to the $55billion EA buyout, taking to X, formerly Twitter, to voice his views on game development.
โProbably a good time to remind people that making games faster and cheaper while charging more has never worked before,” he wrote.
