Black Myth: Wukong developer Game Science has announced the next entry in the Black Myth series. It’s called Black Myth: ‘Zhong Kui’, but those itching to get their hands on it may be waiting for some time, as – according to the new Zhong Kui website – it’s ‘little more than an empty folder at this stage’.
However, despite next-to-no assets available, the team has defended their decision to announce the game early. “It is in our tradition to report our progress to players on every August 20 – and this year is no exception,” their website reads. “However, with the project being little more than an empty folder at this stage, there’s hardly any game footage we can share.
“To keep all hands focused on development, we decided to deliver a CG short to let everyone know a new project has kicked off.”
Unsurprisingly, even the game’s director, Yocar Feng, has ‘absolutely no idea’ when the sequel will come out. “Well, to be honest, even Yocar himself has absolutely no idea,” the website reads. To mark the new announcement, Game Science has changed all Black Myth: Wukong channels to just ‘Black Myth’ but stress that they haven’t even finalised the general story or gameplay mechanics.
When answering a pre-written FAQ about what to expect plot wise, Game Science wrote: “Hard to say for now… looks like we’re not even done with the outline yet. The dev team on the other hand are absolutely fired up – itching to tell new stories well and add new fun to the game.”
What players can expect though is a similar, single-player experience where Wukong players ‘will feel right at home’ and it will also follow the same business model. Game Science did confirm, though, that they are ‘experimenting with concrete differences’ between the two games, so time will tell if these make it through to the final cut. In terms of a potential release, we’d expect something in the next three years. Why? The original game took around six years to make from scratch. With character models and core gameplay now firmly tried and tested, not to mention potential asset reuse, this could shave a significant amount of time off development.
Since landing in 2024, Black Myth: Wukong has gone on to sell more than 25 million units globally, selling 10m units in the first few days of release.
