As Blizzard aims for World of Warcraft Retail to be more than an MMO, player housing has served as one of the game’s biggest boons. However, less than a year after the feature’s addition to the main build, the studio is already backing off its earlier promises.

Player housing was added to the game as a “very long-running feature” with plans to support the house builder for years to come. That was one promise the studio made. The second? That cultural race or class-based aesthetic items would never be locked behind a paywall.

On November 6, 2025, Blizzard published a blog post on virtual currency and player housing for World of Warcraft: Midnight. Under the “philosophy and guiding principals” section, the developer promised that “housing items tied to core fantasies of a player’s race or class, or that already exist in Azeroth, won’t be sold in the shop”.

However, with the new décor sets available for sale, Blizzard has seemingly broken this promise after less than a year. The Haunted Grimtide estate and Grimtide Decor Pack, which sell for $25 and $10 respectively, are themed after the Kul Tiran player race with a Lovecraftian and pirate style for player homes.

Blizzard was quickly called out on social media following the reveal of the bundle. Multiple fans were keen to note that the arrival of the housing items directly breaches Blizzard’s own published guidelines. “This was a lie,” one fan said in response.

“Kul Tiran housing decor in the shop directly contradicts Blizzard’s housing principles from less than a year ago,” another fan said. “It was literally principle #2.”

The arrival of these cosmetic housing items already have fans worrying what other principals will be breached. At the time, the studio explained that “thematically important décor that players know and love will also not appear in the shop”. However, almost immediately after release, player housing sold doormats with Alliance and Horde icons on them.

World of Warcraft plater housing came alongside the addition of a brand-new currency, Hearthsteel. The already-breached guidelines explained that the currency was designed in a “player-friendly way” with a promise make sure players “shouldn’t feel like you have to spent money NOW or risk missing something you want”.

The question on players’ minds right now is: if one promise can be breached now even a year after, how long will the others hold up?
