Bungie’s Marathon has already launched as one of the best games of the year, even if sales are remarkably low. As Bungie and PlayStation both commit to years of additional support for the extraction shooter, the former has confirmed their focus for the future.
As Marathon preps for the release of Season 2 next month, Bungie has revealed some plans for future updates. In a recent message to fans, game director Joe Ziegler admitted that the game has been “too overwhelming to learn” for many fans.
As Bungie works on additional content for the game, an effort will be placed on the shooter’s onboarding process, teaching players how to properly interface with the world of Marathon. Additionally, the team will expand the game with a wealth of new content for fans to chew through.
“We want to build on it with new content and systems that challenge you in new ways to grow, collaborate, and compete with one another in your quest to thrive in Tau Ceti’s deadly environments,” they said. “New zones, zone changes and variants, new shells, new weapons, new equipment, and loot galore. New systems that change how you progress in a season. New contracts that add to the journey of exploration and gaining favor with the factions. And changes to parts of the game that meaningfully help you reexamine what you already know.”
Ziegler confirmed that the future of Marathon will continue to explore “more alien elements and mind warping debuffs”, introducing “new enemies from Tau Ceti and beyond”. Additionally, the team will focus on proving more PvE opportunities for players, giving fans reasons to team up with randoms instead of gunning them down on sight.
“In Season 2, we will be experimenting with two modes, one at the beginning of the season and one towards the middle/latter half of the season,” the director said. “The experimental mode at the beginning of the season will focus more on PVE, but with a light touch of PVP. The second experimental mode will be a PVE-only mode that’s focused on crews being tasked with completing objectives together and making some progress across matches.”
Ziegler confirmed that Marathon updates will continue “beyond 2026 and into 2027” as the team works to bring more players into the extraction shooter. Right now, the team has plans all the way up until Season 5, which should launch halfway through next year, so there’s a lot coming in the future.
