Pearl Abyss’ massive open-world game Crimson Desert has seen some truly massive updates since launch at a rapid pace. Following the release of Crimson Desert Enhanced, a new free upgrade of the game with new story moments, the game’s devs will be slowing down on major updates.

Since launch, Crimson Desert has seen revised gameplay mechanics, revised controls, new content, and more. While the developer is slowing down on these free updates in terms of frequency and scale, the team will still be working on some updates as they also create the game’s first DLC expansion.

PR and marketing director Will Powers explained that the release of the game’s 2.0 update is “a great transition point” for the team to shift focus onto DLC. “We’ve had this great pace of updates continually expanding the world of Pywell,” he told IGN. “With 2.0, this is all very purposeful in how we name stuff. This is very much a fully realised experience within the world.”

Powers reiterated that “there will still be updates”, although fans should expect smaller updates at a less frequent pace. “I don’t think the scope, scale, and pace of them will be as consistent past this point,” he said. “What we’re taking this opportunity to do is shift our development resources from these regular updates to focus on the upcoming DLC.”

With that said, Crimson Desert fans likely won’t have to wait long to play even more content in the absolutely massive open world game. While release dates can also be pushed, Pearl Abyss is planning to release the game’s first expansion is set to release sometime this year.

Additionally, Pearl Abyss wants to bring the game to even more platforms with a Nintendo Switch 2 port of the game currently in development. While there is no release date for this port, the developer has claimed that development of the new version of the game is going well.

As Pearl Abyss continues to work on updates for Crimson Desert, the studio hopes that the game will generate half-a-billion dollars in revenue by the end of 2026.
