Disney and Lucasfilm are reportedly looking to get Star Wars Battlefront 3 underway, finally bringing fans a new entry in the beloved large-scale FPS series.
While Battlefront 2 launched to severe controversy, it’s been almost 10 years since that game’s release. In the decade since, fans have become attached to the sequel, but there’s still a desire for a third title in the series.
Following the success of Star Wars games such as Zero Company and Galactic Racer, Disney and Lucasfilm are reportedly seeking a developer for Star Wars Battlefront 3. In a video by Giant Bomb, renowned industry insider Jeff Grubb explained that Disney are in talks with two studios to create the third game: DICE and Bungie.
DICE famously created the reboot duology of Star Wars Battlefront, but has since been focused on Battlefield since the release of Battlefront 2. Bungie, on the other hand, has just released Marathon, a fantastic-but-maligned FPS extraction shooter.
Grubb explained that Disney has spent a while searching for a new partner to bring Battlefront back to modern gamers, but have been met with rejection. However, DICE and Bungie both appear to have shown interest in working on the next game in the series. While DICE could hopefully re-use some assets from prior games, Bungie would have to start from scratch.
With that said, Bungie does have some history of working with the Star Wars IP. Destiny 2, which the studio has since sunsetted, had a Star Wars themed expansion in an official partnership with Disney. While everything was distinct from the galaxy far, far away, the team proved it could make satisfying Star Wars weaponry.
Even if DICE or Bungie does decide to go ahead and work on a new Star Wars Battlefront 3, it’ll be years until we get our hands on it, especially if Bungie is in charge. Nevertheless, fans have waited nearly a decade for the chance to play a third game in the series, and there’s a lot that could be done with a Battlefront 3.
For example, if DICE or Bungie want to, they could follow some of the ideas found in the original scrapped Battlefront 3. One of the original incarnation’s ideas would’ve seen players traverse from space battles to ground battles which would be amazing for a large-scale multiplayer game. It would be a literal dream come true.
