Newly-independent-again Psychonauts studio Double Fine has announced a plan to make Brutal Legend 2, the long-awaited sequel to their Jack Black-starring hack-and-slash/RTS game. Unfortunately, it will require an absolute buttload of cash to get started.

After being recently cut off from Xbox, Double Fine is now independent again, and the studio is hosting a Kicksarter to fund an internal Game Jam and documentary. In the past, Double Fine’s annual jams have resulted in major releases such as Costume Quest and Stacking, but this time the community is involved.

Via the Kickstarter, fans will be able to choose which title from the studio’s Amnesia Fortnight game jam will be taken and turned into a full game. Right now, the studio is looking to raise £295,000, and it’s already most of the way there.

While the main Kickstarter is already going well, the studio also announced a major, maybe unattainable stretch goal: to fund development of Brutal Legend 2. Originally released in 2009, the heavy metal themed action game has been a cult classic for over a decade, but the game would require a sizeable budget.

Within the Kickstarter, Double Fine added a stretch goal that would result in full development of Brutal Legend 2 if the studio was able to raise $100 million. This would make the project the most successful Kickstarter of all time, although not the largest crowdfunded game of all time.

As for the most successful crowdfunded game of all time, well, that belongs to the still in-development sci-fi MMO Star Ctiizen. At the time of writing, the ongoing project has raised over $1 billion across 14 years of development. With that in mind, 1/10th of Star Citizen’s funds would result in a Brutal Legend 2.

Double Fine is no stranger to crowdfunding. Prior to its acquisition by Microsoft, the studio successfully raised money to fund the development of Psychonauts 2. During crowdfunding, the studio raised $3.8 million to fund the game with the final budget reportedly coming in at around $10 million due to external partners.

Unfortunately, it does seem unlikely that Double Fine will be able to raise $10 million to create Brutal Legend 2, but there’s always a possibility! Hey, maybe Hollywood gamer Jack Black himself could kick some funds towards the project. (Think of it as penance for that terrible Anaconda movie, Jables.)

Thankfully, the original Brutal Legend is still available to play on some modern platforms. The game is still playable on PC and on Xbox Series, but there’s no port to Nintendo Switch or PlayStation 5 at the time of writing,
