Dragon Quest 7 Remake director urges fans it’s “not a rushed project” as players beg for DQ12 updates

Square Enix’s Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is a truly gorgeous redux of the overly long PS1 original. Built from the ground up for modern systems, this new interpretation of the classic JRPG aims to reform the original into a more digestible entry in the long-running series.

With more Dragon Quest remakes seemingly in the works, according to series creator Yuji Hori, many fans have been wondering where the series’ in-development 12th mainline entry is.

Announced way back in 2021, Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate has been absent for years, and a vocal minority of fans frustrated by this have directed their ire towards Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined.

Speaking to fans on social media, via Automaton, Reimagined’s director Masato Yagi urged fans to quell their emotions towards the team of the upcoming remake as the new game isn’t some “rushed project”.

“We’re not rushing production at the last minute. Everyone’s pouring their hearts and souls into this,” the director said. “I just want to make sure that much is understood. Also, I’m not trying to say ‘we’re working hard so don’t complain.’ Please don’t misunderstand.”

The heavy streamlining of Dragon Quest 7, which has long been criticized for its length, removes a number of monster vocations and a lower number of pedestals that allow players to travel to different islands in the game world.

This isn’t the first time the game has been cut down. Back in 2013, Square Enix remade the game for the Nintendo 3DS. The 3DS remake heavily cut content from the PS1 original to critical acclaim, but some complained that even this abridged version of the RPG was too long.

Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined is set to release on February 5th, 2026 for PC, Xbox Series X, PS5, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.
