Following the HD-2D remakes of the series’ original trilogy, Square Enix announced Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined, a glorious rework of the PS1 original that cuts down on its bloated pacing and looks like a CGI animation come to life.
Alongside the series’ twelfth mainline entry in the works, Square Enix is working hard on bringing the beauty of Dragon Quest back into the limelight as series creator Yoji Hori teases even more remakes are in the works.
Speaking in the latest episode of Japanese talk show KosoKoso Hoso Kyoku, via Automatton, Hori explained that there are multiple games in the works at Square Enix. Many players have joked about the release structure of the series’ remakes, going from 3 to a combination of 1 and 2, and then all the way to 7.
Hori explained that the announcement for Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined came before any other remakes because it was closer to the finish line, essentially confirming that there are other remakes of classic games in the works.
“There are various projects in motion, it’s just that 7 happened to get completed first,” Hori told the talk show. The series creator was then asked if the studio is working on remakes of 4, 5 and 6, but no clear answer was given.
While every Dragon Quest game has been popular in its own right, the game’s fifth entry is one of its most historic. The second entry in the series’ Zenithian Trilogy, Hand of the Heavenly Bride is often dubbed one of the best role-playing games ever made, and it really does still live up to its name.
While Yuji Hori hasn’t confirmed which other games are set to receive a full-on remake, I think everyone agrees that Hand of the Heavenly Bride deserves one. Additionally, Dragon Quest 9: Sentinels of the Starry Skies definitely needs to be ported somewhere so it’s not trapped on the original Nintendo DS forever.
