Funcom’s Dune Awakening is coming to consoles. After the game’s PC debut last year, game director Joel Bylos tells FRVR that the upcoming Xbox and PS5 port will bring some much-needed improvements to the game for PC players as well.
In the new port’s announcement, Funcom confirmed a brand-new single-player mode and a new story chapter. However, a number of other under-the-hood improvements are coming as well, including technical improvements and more
Speaking to FRVR prior to the announcement, game director Joel Bylos explained that multiple technical improvements will come to all players as the console launch acts as a second-wind for the game. One major focus for improvement, of course, is the arrival of better controller support, fixing issues with menus and other areas that controller users on PC have suffered with.
“We were just literally in the middle of having this big internal—I’ll politely call it a discussion. We’re having a discussion about controller presets and how the bumpers and things are set up,” Bylos explained. “It’s a very interesting one. The the convoluted control system behind Dune Awakening is actually quite um it’s quite complicated.”
Bylos told us that there’s “more work being done” for controller players on console and PC, including the addition of rumble. However, the game director explained that there are other tech changes that are coming which they will reveal closer to release.
“There’s some cool features that I can’t really talk too much about some of the stuff,” he said. “There are things coming, and I think those things will obviously pass back to the PC version. The PC version will get a huge update at the same time.”
The console version of Dune Awakening isn’t the end, either. While the online survival game—which definitely isn’t an MMO—has seen some major updates since launch, the team is still working to support a ten-year plan of new content. Each year will follow a set theme, Bylos told us, and everything is sketched out.
Unfortunately, there aren’t any real plans to allow players to turn into sandworms, as sad as that is. “Actually, the turning into a sandworm was always in the plan for the 10th year, the last year of Dune Awakening,” Bylos joked. “That’s when we can talk about that.”
Dune Awakening is currently available on PC. The new console version of the survival game launches on September 22, 2026 and will launch in Xbox Game Pass. At the time of writing, there is no Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game.
