Omega Force’s Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition – Remastered is looking to be another strong entry in the long-running Musou games series. Coming after the brilliant Dynasty Warriors Origins, the remake looks back to the past to service fans of the original Musou games, but can we expect more remakes?

Dynasty Warriors series producer Tomohiko Sho and Omega Force lead Tomohiko Sho discussed the possibilities of more remakes with Japanese outlet 4Gamer. While remakes are in vogue right now, Sho explained that working on them can be more exhausting as they’re essentially re-tracing work they already did twenty years ago.

In the interview, Sho explained that the possibility of future remasters depends on the popularity of popularity of Dynasty Warriors 3: Complete Edition – Remastered. “If this remaster of Dynasty Warriors 3 goes well, I think the chances of seeing remasters for Dynasty Warriors 4 and beyond will increase,” he said.

With that said, Sho, who has worked on the series since 2002, doesn’t want to work on more remasters if they can help it. “If I’m being honest, I’d rather not do it,” they said. “It essentially amounts to remaking the game from scratch. Even this time around, there were moments where I found myself thinking, ‘Why am I remaking something I created myself?’”

While Sho laughed about the situation, the Dynasty Warriors lead explained that they don’t want to be bogged down in the past. As they age, the developer explained that they want to keep working on new ideas, even if those new ideas are in sequels to the Dynasty Warriors series. For example, Origins is a brand-new take on the formula, and was well received, and Sho has expressed a desire to continue that sub-series as well.

“I’m in my fifties now,” they said, “and I sometimes find myself wondering how many more titles I can create before I retire. When I think about that, I feel a stronger desire to work on entirely new games or sequels.”

There’s no doubt that fans would love a remaster/remake of Dynasty Warriors 4, one of the other beloved classic entires in the series. (Hell, I count myself amongst those fans!) But as every franchise hops from remake-to-remake, does the DW series also need to go through that format?

Despite the fact that Sho does’t want to make more remakes, they do explained that hey also want to create what fans want to see. “At the same time, I also want to respond to the fans who support this series,” the said, adding that it “was really difficult to realise this remaster”.

“I didn’t expect that I would release what I made 25 years ago to the world with my own hands again,” he continued. “I’m glad that Musou has grown into a series that you can support for so long. We are working hard to make it so that you can enjoy it even if you don’t know the original story. So please take care of all fans!”
