Final Fantasy XIV is not only one of the best MMOs ever released, but also one of two MMOs that have thrived on console. Following the game’s recent Xbox port, Square Enix has claimed that there are “positive discussions” regarding a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game.
Speaking to VGC at Gamescom 2025, Final Fantasy producer Naoki ‘Yoshi-P’ Yoshida teased a Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game could be possible.
“For me, it’s just my aim to provide Final Fantasy 14 and 16 to as many players as possible, and I hope that as many players as possible will be able to enjoy those two games,” the series producer told the outlet.
“We are putting in our best efforts to ensure that this happens, so it’s fine to convey to your readership that I consider the possibilities very positively, and we are putting in our best efforts,” he continued. “So I hope players will look forward to possibilities in the future. But I just ask for a little bit more time.”

Yoshida explained that the Nintendo Switch 2 would offer a brand-new experience for fans of the game. While he would expect most players to go through the main story on PC or “do raiding on PC”, the handheld offers a more casual experience. (I would actually be using the handheld as my main FFXIV machine, to be honest.)
“When it comes to other types of content, they could sit back, relax on the sofa with the Switch 2 in hand, and they could do their gatherer and crafter content,” Yoshi-P said. “And I’m super excited about that sort of possibility for our players.”
Yoshi-P explained that the have been “discussing with Nintendo” regarding bringing Final Fantasy 14 to the handheld. The producer claimed that the “discussions have been positive, so I do hope that players will look forward to hopefully good news in the future”.
Square Enix has been a major supporter of Nintendo hardware with multiple titles releasing first for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Additionally, the company has worked hard to bring the Final Fantasy series to Nintendo’s new handheld with Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade announced alongside the new system.
Final Fantasy 14 would be a major addition to the system, especially considering the Nintendo Switch 2 is lacking true MMOs. With some of the later MMOs content likely being too demanding for the original system, the new handheld offers a unique opportunity for Square Enix.
