Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is almost finished. Currently “progressing well” inside the studio, the currently unnamed Part 3 finale is expected to release sometime next year across PlayStation, PC, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch 2.

While the original entry in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy received an extensive intermission DLC, its sequel Rebirth did not. Remake’s DLC expansion added an entirely new storyline focusing on future party member Yuffie, but Rebirth received nothing.

In a new interview, Remake trilogy director Naoki Hamaguchi explained that the team scrapped its DLC discussions so they could work immediately on the third game. Speaking to Ntower, the director confirmed they “seriously considered the possibility of developing a story DLC”, but they were cut as soon as they entered the planning phase.

“Within the context of a long-term trilogy, we concluded that running development of the second instalment’s DLC in parallel with the third instalment would inevitably affect the third game’s schedule and overall quality,” he continued. “At that point, I believed my primary role was not to add DLC, but to deliver the third entry to fans as quickly as possible at a level of polish they would find satisfying. For that reason, we decided to forgo story DLC for Rebirth.”

As for the game’s finale, that title may indeed receive its own DLC expansions. The director did not confirm if there are currently plans to support the finale with DLC, but hinted that strong fan support would influence the decision to release new expansions.

“As for DLC beyond the third instalment, I believe that will ultimately depend on how strongly fans continue to support Final Fantasy VII as both a title and a franchise,” he said. “If there is significant demand, we’d certainly be open to exploring those possibilities proactively.”

Additional DLC expansions for Final Fantasy 7 Part 3 could include original stories, or adaptations of stories such as Advent Children. Hamaguchi has confirmed that the upcoming game will not change the events of the original’s story, which means that the events of Advent Children would still occur, but would that make for a good game?

There are a multitude of stories set within the Final Fantasy 7 universe, some of which have been told in novels or even mobile games, that could be adapted. Additionally, the FF7 Remake team could decide to create new, original stories. Whatever the case, fans of the new Remake trilogy could get even more content than they were originally promised.
