Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 is targeting Steam Deck and other handhelds because players want more “freedom” nowadays

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 isn’t just being developed for PlayStation 5 and PC. As Final Fantasy 7 Remake Integrate makes its Nintendo Switch 2 debut next year, Square Enix is going hard on its new multiplatform strategy that aims to encompass as many platforms as possible.

While director Naoki Hamaguchi has already discussed the importance of high-quality lighting for games on Nintendo Switch 2, the developer has also been vocal about the importance of targeting multiplatform releases across a wider swathe of devices.

Earlier this year, Hamaguchi explained that Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3 is being developed with both Nintendo Switch 2 and Valve’s Steam Deck in mind. At the time of writing, development is said to be “going very smoothly” across all platforms.

“When we look at the specs for the Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam Deck,” Hamaguchi said. “It’s really getting comparable to the PS5 and Xbox consoles,” they explained. “We do want to keep a focus on the consoles as well, but we also want to keep the handheld devices and their audiences in mind.”

Speaking to Polygon at the 2025 Brasil Game Show, Hamaguchi doubled down on the need to support platforms such as Valve’s Steam Deck. The director explained that, while there may be a gulf in power, it’s about meeting players where they want to play.

Rebirth didn’t run particularly great on Steam Deck, but it was playable. Part 3 might run better as the handheld is now a hardware target.

Hamaguchi explained that, in the past, Square Enix was focused exclusively on “making high-definition games with the intention of them being played on a console with a large TV, or a computer”, but if players are changing so must the developers.

“Nowadays there are many different ways to play available for us. For example, the Steam Deck, that many players use now,” he said. “We have more freedom now. Currently, even high-definition games aren’t played at home. Considering the diversity of ways one can play a game, we believe it’s important to think about it and to adapt to these new modes of play.”

Despite this, Square Enix isn’t cutting anything down for the next entry in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake saga. However, after seeing how many players wanted to experience the first two entries on lower-power hardware, they’re not being taken into account from the very start of development.
