Final Fantasy 7 Revelation won’t be complete on disc to avoid compromising on “quality”, despite Rebirth’s multi-disc release

As the last entry in the colossal FF7 Remake series, Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is a game that many fans were excited to own physically. Unfortunately, the upcoming RPG will release in a partly physical state with all platforms pushed to download additional data on release.

While Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the second game in the series, was a massive game, Square Enix lovingly released the RPG across two Blu-Ray discs on PlayStation 5. For Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, that will not be the case.

Earlier this year, Hamaguchi explained that Square Enix was still in discussion for what the physical version of the trilogy’s finale would look like. “I am working to make the arrangements to allow us to have some kind of physical edition,” he said, as PlayStation announced its plans to end physical media.

Unfortunately, in an interview with IGN, Hamaguchi confirmed that the game would require an additional download on release, making it less a physical release and more a glorified download key. It’s worth noting that, despite claims otherwise, testing of physical games reveals that over 80% of modern releases are playable completely from the disc.

Hamaguchi explained that the “disc discussion, it is a rather sensitive issue”, but they’re “very happy they we are able to release a physical disc version of FFVII Revelation” in some form. However, they claimed that releasing the game even on two discs would mean they would have to sacrifice quality.

“When we had an internal discussion with the development team about how we wanted to approach the physical discs and the physical releases of FFVII Revelation, initially there were conversations about using the same disc size as we did for, say, FFVII Rebirth,” he said. “But if we were to do that, it would mean that we would have to make a compromise in terms of the fidelity and the quality of the game. So as a development team, we didn’t want to do that. We didn’t want to make any compromises for the game.”

As PS5 discs can hold 100GB of data each, that would mean that Final Fantasy 7 Revelation would need to be over 200GB on PS5 to push the team to sacrifice quality. After all, PlayStation 5 games do not stream from the disc, only install data from them.

At the time of writing, the Nintendo Switch 2 version of the game has been reported to be 130GB and will be shipped on a Game Key Card. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, the prior game, weighed in at 145GB on PS5, but a minimum of 91.5GB on Nintendo Switch 2. With this in mind, it is actually possible that the final game in the series could be over 200GB in size on PlayStation and would require three discs.

Of course, Square Enix could create a three-disc physical version of the game and eat the cost to celebrate the finale of the trilogy. However, considering how many of its games the company has already released in Game Key Card format on Nintendo Switch 2, it does seem like the gaming giant is hoping to save as much as possible.
