Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles is an expanded remake of the 1997 original RPG for modern consoles. It’s been a long time coming with fans clamouring for a remake of the obscure spin-off game for the better part of a decade.

While the game is set to release on September 30, 2025, fans are already hoping that the series Game Boy Advance entry Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and its sequel Tactics A2 will also be revived in some form.

Speaking at a roundtable interview at Gamescom 2025, the upcoming remake’s director Kazutoyo Maehiro revealed they’ve already been thinking of bringing back other games in the Tactics sub-series.

If Square Enix is to greenlight any more Tactics games, it will depend on the success of this upcoming release. While Maehiro would like to work on more games, the director worries that the strategy genre may be too small.

“I think when we think about the strategy RPG genre, there’s a lot of very, very interesting and fun games, but I think when you think about the player base, it’s a little bit small,” the director explained (via GamesRadar).

“I think it can depend on how this game does, you know, if we do see that really strong player base get interested in the game, and we do help increase that strategy RPG player base overall, it could potentially lead to future games.”

In a separate discussion with Inverse, Maehiro even explained that there could be new games in the series instead of remaking older titles. As Square Enix lost the source codes for numerous Final Fantasy games over the years, this remake of Final Fantasy Tactics had to be built from scratch. If that’s also the case for other entries, maybe it’s worth trying something new instead.

“That could potentially open the door for doing something with Final Fantasy Tactics Advance or A2, or maybe even sequels and new titles as well,” the director said of the new game’s potential success.

Whatever the case, it is exciting to see Square Enix dive back into the back catalog to revive Final Fantasy Tactics, even if we never get another one. Released when Square would just make countless spin-offs with unique gameplay ideas, it’s a beautiful blast from the past.
