Everyone knows Fortnite is free, right? Well, apparently not for collectors. A physical copy of the game just sold for a considerable amount of money. It sounds crazy to pay thousands for a free-to-play title, but that is precisely what just happened on an auction site.
A sealed copy of the game was sold for $42,500, which sounds ridiculous. To put it into perspective, you can purchase a brand new car for this money or even a boat. This budget also allows you to pay for some once-in-a-lifetime experiences, such as renting a private island or climbing Mount Everest. Or, well, if you’re in love with Fortnite, you can buy more than 7 million V-Bucks for this amount, which would allow you to purchase every single cosmetic item in the game and then some.
Why this Fortnite copy was sold for $42,500
The sale took place via Heritage Auctions, where a flawless copy of the physical disc version of Fortnite attracted a lot of attention. The game is an Xbox One version from 2017, and considering how old and rare it is, its price was much higher than the price of other copies.
Furthermore, this copy includes the Storm Master Weapon Pack, a DLC that includes three weapons and shotgun shells.
Back when the game launched, players had to pay to access Save the World, the PvE mode. It was the only mode in the game before the launch of Fortnite Battle Royale in September 2017, and while it’s still active, most players simply buy digital versions of it and download it.
This specific copy was graded 10 A++ by Wata, which is the highest possible quality score, which drastically increased its value.
The funniest part about this purchase is that the game on the disc is completely outdated. To play Fortnite today, you have to download massive updates anyway. However, the new owner of the disc likely won’t even unpack it. Its value comes from the whole packaging, and using it would decrease it.
