Epic Games has revealed one of the biggest long-term changes ever planned for Fortnite cosmetics. During its Unreal Engine 6 presentation, the company confirmed that Fortnite outfits will eventually work far beyond Battle Royale, opening the door for skins to move across an entire ecosystem of Unreal Engine games.
The announcement came alongside the reveal of Unreal Engine 6, which Epic says is essentially Unreal Engine 5 and Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) coming together into a single platform. While UE6 won’t enter early access until late 2027, Epic has already revealed how Fortnite cosmetics fit into its future vision.
Fortnite skins could work across multiple Unreal Engine games
According to Epic Games, developers building games with Unreal Engine 6 will eventually be able to support Fortnite skins inside their projects. This means players could potentially use skins they already own in Fortnite across other compatible games created with UE6.
At the same time, developers will receive tools to create their own outfits that can also work inside Fortnite, which is even bigger. Instead of cosmetics being locked to a single game, Epic is building a system where certain outfits may travel between experiences. This is the first major step toward making Fortnite skins portable across a wider gaming ecosystem.
In theory, this could allow players to earn, purchase, or unlock cosmetics in a UE6 game and then use them inside Fortnite. At the same time, existing Fortnite skins could appear in participating third-party games.

Epic has already paid out more than $1 billion to UEFN creators, and the upcoming system could make the development even more profitable. However, these new tools won’t be available until late 2027. Epic has not revealed exactly how the system will work, but we should get more information as we get closer to the UE6 release.
If Epic successfully delivers on this vision, buying a Fortnite skin may eventually mean much more than unlocking a cosmetic for Battle Royale. It could become a cosmetic that follows players across an entire network of connected Unreal Engine experiences, which is a solid long-term plan.
In the meantime, players can unlock a couple of free skins in Fortnite or use some of the best XP maps to level up quickly and get more cosmetics from the Battle Pass.
