Epic Games has partnered with Unity in a “unique” partnership designed to bring even more game experiences into Fortnite.
The two game engines have both been seen as the go-to off-the-shelf tools for budding game developers over the last decade, but “some really amazing networking technology” means the two tools can now speak together.
Announced at the Unity Unite 2025 event, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney confirmed that developers using Unity will be able to publish their games inside Fortnite. This means that experiences built in Unity will sit alongside games made with UEFN, and devs will be able to make money from their projects.
Additionally, Unity is also bringing its cross-platform commerce platform to Unreal Engine. This will allow Unreal developers more choice for managing digital catalogs. payment providers and web shops across PC, mobile, and web, as well as manage pricing, promotions, and live operations.
“Just like the early days of the web, we believe that companies need to work together in order to build the open metaverse in a way that’s interoperable and fair,” said Tim Sweeney, Founder and CEO of Epic Games. “Working alongside Unity we’re helping developers build fun games, reach bigger audiences, and find success.”
Unity and Unreal Engine’s partnership is rather shocking, but it makes sense considering Epic Games’ goal with Fortnite. While Fortnite has seen massive success over its events, including the ongoing The Simpsons event, it is still significantly less popular than Roblox.
Roblox recently hit a peak player count of 47.3 million concurrent players, and that number only appears to be rising. A large part of this is due to hit viral games like Grow A Garden and Steal A Brainrot, both of which do have Fortnite versions.
However, it’s clear that Epic’s focus is to ensure that developers of new and exciting games are able to bring their experiences to Fortnite, no matter how they’re made. It’s a battle for new content, and allowing Unity experiences to run within a Fortnite container is an ingenious way of ensuring more content.
