One of Fortnite’s most recognizable developers is stepping away from social media. The developer announced this recently, saying the growing toxicity surrounding the game has begun affecting his personal life.
Tofu Chris, Senior Director of Fortnite, shared a brief message announcing that he would be taking a break. According to the developer, the negativity he has been dealing with recently is no longer staying online and has started to invade his personal life. He ended the message on a positive note, thanking players and saying it had been “really fun” interacting with the community over the years.
Fortnite community backlash appears to have reached a breaking point
The announcement came shortly after Epic Games revealed the next Fortnite Battle Pass, which generated heavy criticism across social media. While players regularly debate Battle Pass cosmetics, gameplay changes, and monetization decisions, this latest wave of discussion quickly became more heated.
What makes Chris’ announcement stand out is his long history with the community. For years, he has been one of the most active Epic Games employees on social media, regularly responding to feedback, sharing updates, and engaging with players in a way few developers do. He’s been especially active during Season 2 and was heavily involved in the Fortnite Community Day.
Even when discussions became critical, he was often willing to answer questions and participate in conversations, earning a reputation as one of Fortnite’s most approachable developers. Unfortunately, this has come to an end, as the developer revealed on X.

For veteran Fortnite players, the situation may feel familiar, since this is not the first time that developers have taken a break. During the game’s early years in Chapter 1, game developers were active on Reddit, replying to posts, discussing balance changes, and giving players insight into what was happening behind the scenes. At the time, Fortnite was often praised for the close relationship between its developers and community.
That level of communication gradually disappeared as the game grew larger. Epic even stopped releasing detailed patch notes starting with Chapter 2, which may have something to do with the community reaction.
Chris’ decision to step away from social media does not necessarily mean Epic Games will reduce communication again. However, it does show that managing one of the largest gaming communities can be difficult. At the same time, many players hope that the developer will return soon, since he was a breath of fresh air.
In the meantime, players can still prepare for the next season by checking out when the season-ending Fortnite live event starts in their regions. Epic is also offering a couple of free Fortnite skins that can be unlocked ahead of Season 3, and those who need a leveling boost can use XP maps to unlock all the current Battle Pass rewards.
