Re-Logic’s always-evolving survival game is evolving yet again. After years of waiting, it seems that the exciting Terraria crossplay release date is finally approaching. However, we don’t have an exact date for its launch just right now.
As Re-Logic continues work on the game’s 1.4.6 update, which will also add music blocks, customised tree variations, and more, the studio is also working on full crossplay between PC, consoles, and even mobile.
In the game’s latest State of the Game announcement, Head of Business Strategy Ted ‘Loki’ Murphy confirmed that “the crossplay era of Terraria is drawing very close”. Earlier this month, the studio finished putting the finishing touches on Phase 1, which includes LAN and dedicated server support, but there’s still work to be done.
Phase 2 consists of cross-network session codes that will allow players to connect to each other across all platforms. Additionally, the phase will focus on stability of crossplay, attempting to eliminate desync and connection issues between all players.
“We put all of the finishing touches on crossplay phase one earlier this month and then dropped it into extensive testing. Given the scope of this update in regards to being a new feature that cuts across multiple platforms, we expect Terraria 1.4.6 will get tighter scrutiny during the submissions process,” the developer said.
While the studio planned to submit the Terraria crossplay update this week, it turns out that additional issues arose that need to be fixed. However, the studio “should be back on track by next week” to bring crossplay to players.
Once the studio completes “the finishing touches” on the new update, the update will have to pass certification from all platforms. “Once we have full signoff, we will push the big launch button and Terraria 1.4.6 and crossplay phase one will be in your hands at last,” they said.
Murphy also revealed that there is more work to be done in the future for Terraria. He explained that Re-Logic is currently “getting ready for the last few months of the year and setting in place for crossplay phase two as well as what is to come after that.”
Terraria was originally released in 2011, but the game has evolved immensely since then. Despite attempting to end support multiple times, the studio has continued to expand on the game with substantial free updates for a decade-and-a-half.
