We are only a few days away from the end of the fair play era in Fortnite. With the upcoming update, Epic Games will release a new feature that will allow players to purchase items in creator-made islands for V-Bucks. While this is a great monetization opportunity for creators and developers, it also comes with a huge downside that may ruin the user experience.

Initially, Epic Games wanted to release this update in late 2025. However, due to some issues, the update was postponed to January 2026. Now, the feature is set to arrive with the next Fortnite update, which will be a game-changer.

Fortnite is adding microtransactions to Creative islands

Creators of Fortnite islands have been able to monetize their maps for the past few years. Dozens of them have become millionaires, while thousands of players have made at least $1,000. Now, Epic is releasing even more monetization options, as creators will be able to add microtransactions to their maps.

While this is great for creators, the biggest concern is the inevitable explosion of scam islands. For years, certain creators have used clickbait thumbnails promising tons of XP or free skins to lure players into their maps, which has sometimes gone unnoticed. Until now, they have only earned money through engagement payouts. Starting January 9, they can directly charge you V-Bucks. Fortunately, Epic will review all the islands, and players will also be able to report them for an additional review.

Even without scam islands, the new feature will make many Creative maps worse, as they will be turned into pay-to-win games.

The line between a fun game and a V-Buck trap is about to become non-existent, so if you are a player, you need to be careful. If you’re a parent, make sure to use parental controls to prevent your child from purchasing V-Bucks.

Epic Games will certainly ban creators who use scams on their maps. Starting January 9, players will have an additional option that will allow them to report in-island transactions in Fortnite. When Epic verifies a scam offer, any player who reported their purchase and all players who purchased that offer in the 20 days prior to the verification will have their V-Bucks returned, as clarified by Brian Sharon, Senior Communications Manager at Epic Games.

If you need to level up quickly, we advise you to use legitimate XP maps in Fortnite. Also, don’t ever spend your V-Bucks on a map that may imply you can get free cosmetics, as you can always unlock a couple of free Fortnite skins and even some free V-Bucks.
