The latest Fortnite update brought back Scales, a popular pet back bling from Chapter 1. Once again, Epic Games has once again converted a pet back bling into a Sidekick, with a release expected soon in the Item Shop. Players who owned the original version will also receive the Sidekick for free, continuing a growing trend.
We’ll now take a closer look at the upcoming Fortnite Sidekick, check its potential release date, and the price. On top of that, we’ll explain who can get it for free and what steps are necessary to get the new pet. In addition to the pet, Epic also released a new free skin in Fortnite, which is available to everyone.
How to get the Scales Sidekick for free in Fortnite?
The April 16 Fortnite update removed three game modes and made Save the World free. On top of that, Epic Games added several new cosmetics with it, including two Sidekicks. One of these is Scales, who was last available in late 2018.
Originally, Scales was available in the Season 6 Battle Pass. Players needed to reach Tier 43 to unlock him, and he had two more styles. Now, Epic turned Scales into a Sidekick, and players who unlocked Scales in Chapter 1 will receive the Sidekick version for free.
Epic Games has done this with all the pets-turned-into-Sidekicks cosmetics in the past, with the most recent example being Empress, a popular cat.

The new Fortnite Sidekick will be automatically sent to all eligible players soon. Its release date hasn’t been revealed yet, but considering that the pet was added on April 16, we expect it to come to the Item Shop by the end of the month. Epic generally sends out free Sidekicks two to three days before they come to the shop, so eligible players should get Scales within the next two weeks.
The price of the Sidekick hasn’t been officially revealed either. However, judging by the past Sidekicks, Scales will likely cost between 1,200 and 1,500 V-Bucks.
In the meantime, players who want more cosmetics can unlock several free Fortnite skins. On top of this, XP maps in Fortnite offer a quick way to level up and unlock cosmetics from the Battle Pass, both free and paid.
