Fortnite is getting close to another big milestone. The game will turn nine years in September, yet it’s still growing. While the battle royale title has gone through slower periods, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney recently made it clear that the game is once again moving in the right direction.
According to him, Fortnite had several seasons that were “good but not great,” which led to a gradual loss of players over time. However, the recent stronger seasons have helped reverse that trend. Now, nearly a decade after its release, Epic’s game still dominates the battle royale genre.
Fortnite is still growing in its ninth year
Fortnite first launched in 2017, and very few games have managed to stay as relevant for this long. Over the years, Epic has turned it from a standard battle royale into a massive platform filled with concerts, creator-made maps, crossovers, limited-time events, and several different game modes.
Even with all of that, keeping players interested is not easy. Fortnite depends heavily on seasonal content, and Sweeney’s comments show how much each season matters. “We went through several seasons that were good but not great, and when we see that, we see compounding losses of players. And then we had two Fortnite seasons that were really good, and we’ve seen compounding growth in players,” Epic Games’ CEO said.
When seasons are only decent, players slowly leave. When they are strong, the opposite happens, and the player base begins growing again. This is especially important as Fortnite moves deeper into Chapter 7. Epic has already shown that it wants to keep experimenting with the game, rather than simply repeating the same formula every few months.

The current chapter has brought new map changes, fresh gameplay ideas, and more content that encourages players to return. For the first time in the game’s history, the game developer changed an entire map between seasons, which was massive.
Epic likely has bigger plans for Fortnite’s ninth anniversary later this year, especially if the game continues gaining momentum. A major anniversary would be a perfect opportunity for Epic to celebrate Fortnite’s history while also teasing what comes next. For now, the biggest takeaway is simple: Fortnite is still going strong. After nearly nine years, the game is not just surviving, but growing again.
With Chapter 7 off to a strong start, players should expect more updates and events. For now, they can also check out the latest free Fortnite skins or use the best XP maps to level up quickly.
