Fortnite has just released the biggest Zero Build update since the mode launched. It’s been four years since this popular mode was released, and Epic Games just made it much better by introducing sweeping changes. The update aims to make the mode faster, more aggressive, and more focused on pure gunplay.

According to Epic, the core identity of Zero Build has always been straightforward combat. Now, the developers want to emphasize it even further. Holding the pickaxe now grants infinite stamina, eliminations restore Overshield, and the update introduced so-called “Pocket Items” as well, which are explained below. Fall damage has also been removed.

On top of this, the community will help Epic shape the future of Zero Build, which could be one of the update’s most important additions in the long term.

Fortnite Zero Build brings Pocket Items and intense early gameplay

The biggest feature is the introduction of brand-new “Pocket Items” in Fortnite Zero Build, which completely replace the old Build button. These are unlimited-use utility tools that operate on cooldowns rather than consumable charges. Every player will automatically spawn into matches with one equipped, and they can be swapped at Vending Machines scattered around the island.

On the first day, three Pocket Items are available: Shockwave Grenades, Med Mist Grenades, and Shield Bubbles. These fit both aggressive and defensive players, and Epic will likely add more of them in the future.

Epic is also giving players more resources immediately off the spawn. Every match will now begin with players carrying a Pistol, a Small Shield Potion, and their selected Pocket Item. The goal appears to be to reduce early-game moments where players land without gear and instantly lose fights.

This is just one of the changes that will make the early game more intense, as the movement is getting major upgrades, too.

More movement upgrades have arrived

Players can now manually dive toward the ground after jumping from the Battle Bus instead of being forced into automatic glider deployment near the surface. This allows for much faster drops and creates more control over landing timings, although mistimed dives could be risky.

In addition to the Battle Bus change, Fortnite has also implemented a massive stamina buff that is granted by holding the pickaxe. Players who hold the pickaxe while running now get unlimited stamina, making Zero Build faster than ever before.

Finally, Glider Redeploy has returned when launching from elevated positions, making traversing the island much faster. When paired with unlimited stamina from the pickaxe and Shockwave Grenades, this could be a perfect combination for aggressive players who enjoy pushing others and racking up eliminations.

Fortnite Zero Build rewards aggressive gameplay

The new Fortnite Zero Build update rewards aggressive players more than before. Eliminations will now fully restore Overshield, encouraging players to continue pushing fights instead of disengaging to recover. This change will likely speed up the pacing of matches and increase overall combat intensity.

However, it’s important to note that those who prefer slower gameplay won’t be put at a disadvantage either. Environmental cover is becoming much stronger, as trees, rocks, and buildings now take less damage from firefights. This makes them more reliable for cover, but if this isn’t enough, Epic has also improved Smoke Grenade coverage and added Brick-a-Bunkers.

Brick-a-Bunkers serve as a new variation of the classic Port-a-Bunker. Unlike the original version, these instantly deploy with a full ramp setup and doors on both sides, giving players much stronger defensive options during fights.

Players who enjoy teaming up with their squads will be delighted to hear that Reboot Vans now operate much faster. This change allows players to bring their teammates back much quicker, but it also allows enemies to bring their allies back to action.

Fortnite has removed Fall Damage in Battle Royale modes

One of the biggest changes in the entire update is the complete removal of fall damage in unranked modes. Instead of being instantly eliminated after a deadly fall, players will now trigger a new “Splat” animation that leaves them at just 1 HP while completely removing all shields and Overshield. Players are also briefly vulnerable while recovering from the animation, creating a punishment system that still feels dangerous without immediately ending a match.

The change applies to both Build (Classic) and Zero Build playlists in unranked matches, although competitive modes will continue using traditional fall damage eliminations.

In the meantime, Epic is offering a couple of free skins in Fortnite for a limited time. Furthermore, players can use some of the best XP maps to level up quickly and unlock Battle Pass rewards.
