The latest Fortnite update was released on Friday, January 9, and was much bigger than players expected. It brought the South Park collaboration, which has been very popular so far. However, Epic Games has added many other content, including what is arguably the biggest change to the storm yet.
The storm has largely remained unchanged for the first eight years. Epic has started experimenting with it in late 2025, but before that, the game developer mostly changed storm timings. Now, you can even control the storm in Fortnite, and if you do it properly, you can easily win games.
How to control storm in Fortnite?
The South Park collaboration has brought several game-changing items to Fortnite. You can pick up Kenny’s Medallion if you want an extra life, while the Stick of Truth allows you to control the storm. You can pick up this item from a special rift anomaly, although it doesn’t spawn in every match.
Once you pick up the Mythic item, you can choose where you want the storm circle to appear in the end game. Furthermore, the storm will start closing in faster, allowing you to win the match in less time than usual.

Over the past few months, Epic has experimented with different storm shapes, which is another big change. Now, if you get to the Mythic item faster than other players, you are almost guaranteed to win if you pick a great spot with a ground advantage.
Alternatively, you can use the Stick of Truth to position the storm in the water surrounding the island and have a chaotic end-game!
The Mythic item will be removed in early February, as well as South Park cosmetics, so make sure to unlock them before they expire. You can check some of the best XP maps in Fortnite if you need to level up quickly or read how to unlock free Fortnite skins.
