Rockstar Games has updated the minimum firmware requirement for GTA 6 on PS5 as the upcoming open-world game nears release.
As GTA 6 sneaks closer to release, the open-world crime game is expected to boast the biggest entertainment launch of all time. Also boasting the series’ largest map size yet, Grand Theft Auto 6 has been met with unprecedented levels of hype.
With GTA 6’s release just around the corner, PlayStation has been rapidly updating the PS5 system firmware to keep out hackers. With homebrew jailbreakers cracking the PlayStation 5’s security, there’s a sense that the launch of Rockstar Games’ new open-world game is increasing the tenacity of hackers.
Over the last few months, PlayStation has been rapidly updating the PS5’s system firmware to block jailbreakers from exploiting their systems. In fact, just earlier today, the company released another patch, version 26.07-14.22.00, that makes “some security fixes to the system software”.
In a surprise move, Rockstar Games has also updated the minimum firmware requirements for GTA 6 prior to launch. Rockstar Games’ upcoming open-world game now requires players to have firmware 14.22.00 installed whereas previously the game only required the use of 14.10.00 and upwards.
This means that any jailbreakers or pirates looking to play GTA 6 will have to find a way to crack Sony’s latest firmware and dump the open-world game. When Sony releases another patch for the system after the game’s launch, it’s unlikely that the minimum firmware requirements will change again as dumps of the game’s launch built will likely already be made.
Of course, GTA 6 likely isn’t safe for too long, but it is a rather unprecedented move for games to update their minimum firmware requirements during the pre-launch period. This should mean that this option is also available for developers of other games which would allow studios to block pirates from booting their software on modded systems.
With the launch of Rockstar Games’ upcoming behemoth, though, there is seemingly an urge to protect the game more than any other release. While the game is launching on Xbox Series alongside PS5, the game’s marketing is essentially treating the game as if it was an exclusive, and PlayStation is likely banking on massive digital sales numbers of the title this holiday period.
Nevertheless, it goes to show just how protected GTA 6 is by both Rockstar Games and PlayStation. When this much money is involved, every method possible will be used to keep it.
