As Helldivers 2 recovers from yet another controversy, fans of Arrowhead’s brilliant co-op game have introduced game-changing features via a brand-new mod.
Described as a “fanmade alternative to the official Galactic War”, the Custom Galactic War mod is a major online overhaul for fans of the shooter that adds its own balancing, features, locations, and more.
The new mod aims to deliver a faster-paced player experience with new biomes to explore, modified enemy spawns, and features that the official game still does not have. Created by a team of passionate modders, it’s an extensive experience that aims to improve the scale of Helldivers 2.
In the mod, players can already engage in multi-faction battles, allowing them to go up against two factions at once. Additionally, the mod introduces its own map types with dense foliage, and even mech customisation options, all features fans have been clamouring for since launch.
In the past, Arrowhead has addressed some of the features that fans have added in this mod. Recently, Arrowhead CEO Shams Jorjani explained that multi-faction battles have been discussed by devs, but adding them requires the team to fix “a lot of technical challenges”.
In order to download the mod, players must join the project’s Discord Server. Additionally, due to the mod’s popularity, players will have to go through an application process to not flood the fan servers with too much traffic.
Helldivers 2 has a vibrant modding community, but this is the game’s most ambitious project by far. While the game has seen a large number of custom weapons and other additions, this new mod project overhauls the game in a number of ways, and the modders plan to continue improving as more players join the custom Galactic War.
Unfortunately, as always, console players will have to miss out on the ambitious mod, and there is some worry in the community that the project will be shut down. Nevertheless, for now, the Custom Galactic War is live, and it is glorious.
While modders are off doing their own thing, Arrowhead is still working on additional updates for Helldivers 2. The studio has reiterated that its major progression overhauls are in active development with players able to see the studio’s plans for the future sometime this Summer.
Additionally, the team is working on continued improvements to its internal engine, allowing for the introduction of new features and additional improvements.
