For the last year, Arrowhead Game Studios has promised that significant progression updates will be coming to Helldivers 2 in the future.
Following 2025’s abysmal technical state, Arrowhead has made Helldivers 2 much better to play. However, as the game continues through its second year of content updates, players are hoping for meaningful updates that give them a reason to play.
Alongside admitting that Super Credits should be easier to earn for higher-tier difficulties, Helldivers 2 creative director Johan Pilestedt explained that additional progression options are “high up” on the to-do list for Arrowhead, but explained that it’s more difficult than some fans would assume.
“There are multiple plans and discussions about improving the existing systems such as progression, weapon customisation, DSS, etc,” Pilestedt told fans. “Unfortunately, we have been pushing hard to meet what we see as the expectation on content for each new big update which unfortunately means that the team is forced to down prioritise ‘what we already have’ in favor of novelty.”
Pilestedt explained that the introduction of weapon customisation was supposed to provide players with a meaningful progression option. However, with the lack of updates to the system and the fact that some weapons have no customisation options at all, it is now seen as an underwhelming form of progression by fans.
“Weapon Customization was deemed as ‘not as significant’ in resolving the lack of progression… but I personally think we just need more of it,” the developer said, explaining that the feature is currently “down prioed” at Arrowhead.
Pilestedt confirmed that weapon customisation will be expanded in the future with Arrowhead already creating an ammo system that is “not enabled because of how hard balancing will be”. Unfortunately, there is no timeline on when players will be able to play with the deeper level of customisation.
Nevertheless, the creative director explained that progression is not an easy addition to the game. “Progression is very systemic,” they said. “It touches rewards, resources, difficulty, player motivation, unlock pacing, balance, and long-term goals. Changing it is not isolated, and if done poorly it can create new problems in systems that already exist.”
Pilestedt explained that “meaningful progression takes time to get right and we are working on it”, adding that this is “one of the areas where Helldivers 2 has the most room to improve”. Right now, as most daily players have grabbed all of the game’s upgrades, there is simply nothing to do outside of grinding Super Credits and Warbonds.
The creative director later added onto their original AMA post, explaining that it’s clear players “want the game to deepen” as they want “more meaningful reasons to keep playing beyond the next Warbond”.
“Furthermore, the concerns that warbonds can feel like they are moving faster than fixes, polish and systemic improvements,” they continued. “Which is not the intent, but perception matters. Trust is not rebuilt by me saying that “yeah, sometime in the future” – it is by action alone, over time, that clearly says that we are listening and acting in good faith.”
There is no roadmap on when Arrowhead will be introducing any new features into Helldivers 2, but it’s clear that fans want the game to expand. With Arrowhead claiming multiple times that it wishes to add “sequel-level features” into the game, fans are still waiting for major features to come to the game.
Helldivers 2’s next major update comes in the form of the Exo Experts Warbond which brings two new mechs, other weapons, and new armours to the game.
