Helldivers 2 has been in a terrible state as of late, but the team at Arrowhead Game Studios is actively working on ways to make the game more playable. While it seems the developers won’t be able to fix the PC version’s massive install size anytime soon, there are major patches in the works.

Yesterday, Arrowhead released the first major patch directed at the game’s major performance issues as well as its extreme number of glitches. The 4.1.0 update fixed dozens of glitches and introduced some well-needed optimisation passes, as well as also rebalancing almost every enemy in the game.

However, this is just the start of the work needed to save Helldivers 2 as player counts fell in the wake of the game’s overall buggy state. Speaking to fans on Discord, Arrowhead Game Studios’ CEO Shams Jorjani explained that the team will need a lot of time to bring the game back to its former glory.

“Before we return to (what we hope is a new normal) we have more patches coming,” the CEO told fans on the Helldivers Official Discord server. “Performance will take many many more months of work to get to even more meaningful improvement,” he later added.

The Arrowhead CEO explained theat they’ve already “made a bunch of changes behind the scenes in our development routines” that should mean patches will release in a more stable form. Additionally, they revealed that they have already “got another patched lined up in the future” that will continue to address the ongoing complaints from fans.

This does mean that Helldivers 2 players will be missing out on a new Warbond this month with Jorjani explaining they instead “chose to focus on getting the game quality up first”, something that fans publicly called for earlier this year.

Jorjani also commented on the fan requests to properly reduce the game’s file size on PC where concessions made for mechanical hard drive users have caused the game to be three times bigger on the platform compared to consoles. The Arrowhead CEO explained that the game is now 9GB smaller on PC than before, but “a big change won’t happen until we figure out how to handle mechanical hard drives”.

This isn’t the first time that Helldivers 2 has been in a rough state. Shortly after the game’s original release, the game required major balance patches in the wake of a countless review bombs. Right now, Arrowhead has kindly asked players to not review bomb the game this time around.
