Hollow Knight: Silksong is finally coming out later this year after a very lengthy development period. The indie Metroidvania is beloved by an almost fever-like fanbase hungry for new content, and they will soon be given it in droves.
But what happens after Silksong launches and players get to sip up their delicious feast of bug-themed content? Is that the end? Will Hollow Knight be put out to pasture in favour of something new? No, actually.
Speaking to Bloomberg (paywalled) about the lengthy seven-year development cycle of Hollow Knight: Silksong, Team Cherry explained that there is “a plan” for adding even more “ambitious” content than what the main experience offers.
“Launching it is obviously quite exciting,” said Ream Cherry co-founder William Pellen. “What comes after for us is equally as exciting.”
This was backed by the other co-founder, Ari Gibson, who revealed that more content will be added to the game post-launch that pushes the game even further.
“The most interesting thing now is what can we add to it next,” Gibson said. “We got a plan. Admittedly, some of the plans for that stuff are kind of ambitious as well, but hopefully we can achieve some of it.”
With that statement, it seems that the next batch of Hollow Knight: Silksong content is likely a while away, but fans of the Metroidvania are very used to waiting. After all, if you can wait a very long seven years for one follow-up, what’s a couple of years for even more of it?
As for the reason Silksong has taken so long. Well, that’s a different story, and we’d highly suggest reading through the original interview to learn more. Simply put, the team weren’t pressured and were having fun, but there’s a lot more nuance there we’d suggest reading.
