A long in-development Baldur’s Gate 3 mod has released that revamps Wyll’s story. As one of the most underserved characters in Larian’s RPG, this new mod cleverly gives the character more agency over his own fate.
In Baldur’s Gate 3, Wyll has noticeably less story content and development than any other origin character. In a Reddit AMA earlier this year, senior writer Kevin VanOrd admitted that the team restarted development on Wyll’s story during early access and, as a result, the content “is sparser than I’d have liked”.
Nevertheless, fans still fell in love with the character, as they have with every BG3 party member. While Larian has left Baldur’s Gate 3 behind to focus on Divinity, fans have been working on their own content for Wyll. These efforts include restoring cut dialogue, additional romance scenes, and more.
Now, modder Magnetuning has released “a massive overhaul of Wyll’s quest regarding his pact” with Mizora. As part of their ongoing “Wyll Cinematic Universe”, a series of mods to improve the character’s content using cut content and spliced audio, the mod aims to improve on the depth of Wyll’s relationship with the alluring demon.
Available to grab here, the “If Fate Chose Differently” mod gives Wyll a “Pact Points” system, similar to other companions in the game. As you play, new dialogue options appear using edited audio clips that give Wyll “more agency through the story, up until the Act 3 scene where he breaks his pact”.
Additionally, the mod has been made without the use of any gross Generative AI tools. Instead, the additional 60 voice lines are a combination of edited sentences to create new dialogue and repurposed voice lines.
“All audio added by this mod was edited together from vanilla lines; I could even provide you a list of all the files I used,” the Baldur’s Gate 3 modder told players. “I am a professional audio editor, and I’m against the use of generative AI. You do not need AI to make things like this, if you know what you’re doing. And if you don’t yet, it’s definitely possible to learn! With practice, anyone can do this, too. No AI required.”
The modder explained that the project took “a year of on-and-off work to make”, but hopes that it gives Wyll “the autonomy he deserves”. Honestly, out of everything Larian did for Baldur’s Gate 3 after launch, it is surprising that Wyll’s story feels so light compared to everyone else’s, although adding additional story content likely would’ve taken a lot of work.
As Baldur’s Gate 3 is now left entirely to the community, modders are constantly working on amazing additions to the RPG. For example, Path to Menzoberranzan, a full custom campaign created by hundreds of BG3 fans is currently in deep development with plans for an alpha demo later this year the size of the base game’s Nautiloid sequence.
Additionally, Larian is hard at work on Divinity, its next major CRPG. Right now, little is known about the game, although CEO Swen Vincke has described it as “Larian Unleashed”. Very exciting stuff… even if it’ll be many years until we can play it.
