After years of development, the more action-focused Minecraft-like game Hytale is out, and it’s been a huge success for developer Hypixel. Currently in early access, the game has already seen some rapid major patches, but the team is planning to release updates even quicker than before.
In a statement on Twitter, CEO Simon Collins-Laflamme explained that the studio’s pre-release updates will now “go out weekly” to get features into players’ hands earlier. This means that there will not only be “more time for modders and servers to adapt” to changes, but also so “developers can spend more time building, less time shipping”.
“Going forward, we’ll use the pre-release patchline to be a bit more adventurous,” the Hytale lead said. “It will be updated weekly and may be unstable by design; this is where new features, larger changes, and iterations happen. FYI, we might skip a week from time to time for holidays, PTO, or other reasons.”
Collins-Laflamme explained that pre-release “instability” will be communicated to players, but there are also processes in place to protect players against major issues. Hytale already has automated world backups, but the team also encourages players to manually back up their data as well if they’re planning to engage in pre-release patches.
The CEO explained that the “big plus” of this update method means that “devs aren’t stuck in constant shipping mode and can focus on creating content”. While these rapid pre-release updates will be buggy, that’s the point, they’re designed to showcase new features to players and get feedback as soon as possible, all while letting the game evolve at a good pace.
While Minecraft, Hytale’s obvious inspiration, has seen years of updates, it’s also been quite slow to evolve over the years. Hytale appears to be the opposite; with this method of early access development, new features can be added, refined, pulled, and reworked as fast as possible, all while engaging hardcore fans and keeping the normal playerbase entertained.
Hytale is currently available only on PC in an early access state exclusively via its official website. There are no plans for a Steam release at the time of writing.
