Speculation over the 007 First Light theme tune is growing, after artist Lana Del Rey registered a new song also called ‘First Light’. The Summertime Sadness singer-songwriter was spotted by keen-eyed fans on Reddit (and then cited by Eurogamer) having registered the new tune with the American Society of Composers, Authors, and publishers (ASCAP).

While this is purely speculation, the timing and name of the song is enough to cause a stir (see what we did there?). If true, this wouldn’t be the first time Del Rey has penned a Bond theme. Ten years ago, she wrote a theme for the Sam Mendes-directed Spectre, but this was turned down, with producers favouring Sam Smith’s Writing’s on the Wall.

When asked by the BBC last year about scoring a Bond theme, she responded: “I mean, how has that not happened yet?” before signing a chorus from 24, which features in her 2015 album, Honeymoon. “I wrote that for them,” she added.

First Light, which is due next year, is being developed by IO Interactive – the Danish studio best-known for their work on the incredible Hitman games. Following the footsteps of a younger Bond, played by The OA actor Patrick Gibson, gameplay is reminiscent of Agent 47’s adventures, featuring sprawling sandboxes and multiple ways to complete objectives.

It’s once again powered by the Glacier Engine, which has been upgraded to maximize spectacle and fidelity. While plot details are thin on the ground, Gibson’s Bond is certainly at the earlier stages of his career – and not yet a 00. The gameplay shown at September’s PlayStation State of Play showed Bond working as part of a team, albeit ‘going rogue’ and ignoring objectives – behaviour typical to Ian Fleming’s hero.

Joining Gibson in the First Light cast is Gemma Chan, who featured in Eternals, and Lennie James who many will recognize from The Walking Dead TV series. First Light is schedule to arrive on console and PC on March 27 next year.
