Deadpool is the most unique character in Marvel Rivals. He is the only hero in the game who can perform any role, making him an ideal choice for flex players. Wade Wilson is a true jack of all trades, but NetEase has no plans to release similar heroes anytime soon.
Guangyun Chen, the game’s creative director, discussed multi-role heroes in an interview with FRVR ahead of Marvel Rivals Season 7.5. Chen described Deadpool’s role-switching as a major milestone, but also pointed out that the team doesn’t want to “oversaturate the game” with more hybrid heroes.
Marvel Rivals to limit “jack-of-all-trades” heroes
Marvel Rivals has big plans for 2026, and the year started with Deadpool’s release in January. Unlike other heroes in the game, he can play as a tank, damage dealer, or healer. On top of this, players can switch his role on the fly, allowing them to adapt to the situation and counter enemies more effectively.
“Deadpool’s role-switching was a major milestone,” Chen said for FRVR. “But we approach ‘multi-role’ kits with caution to maintain character identity,” he added.
Considering that Deadpool is a chaotic and unpredictable hero who constantly breaks rules, turning him into a multi-role character makes sense. His “wildcard” archetype was perfect for this experiment, although we likely won’t see more heroes like him in the near future. After all, NetEase wants every Marvel Rivals hero to feel distinct, a decision that helps preserve hero identity.
“While there is always room for innovation, our priority is ensuring each hero feels distinct. We don’t want to over-saturate the game with ‘jack-of-all-trades’ characters,” Guangyun Chen emphasized.
Releasing too many multi-role characters would make team comps messy and reduce Deadpool’s uniqueness. Balancing heroes is already hard enough, and hybrid characters would make this task even more challenging. At the end of the day, Deadpool was designed as a one-off experiment, not a blueprint for future heroes.
NetEase has also revealed that Marvel Rivals will move beyond a standard 6v6 game this year. With a new season around the corner, the developer will add more content that will make the game feel fresh, including major buffs and nerfs and an upcoming 1v6 game mode.
