Marvel Rivals has come a long way since its first-ever season. NetEase has released many updates for it, adding new features and improving it. The monetization system has also changed, as the game developer introduced event passes and new currencies. Now, it appears that Marvel Rivals will get a loot box system, which doesn’t sit well with many players.

If implemented properly, loot boxes can be great and rewarding. However, they are generally linked to aggressive monetization practices, and adding more microtransactions is never a good idea. For now, we don’t have many details about how they will work in Marvel Rivals, but here’s everything that we know so far.

Marvel Rivals could get the loot box system in Season 4

Season 4 of Marvel Rivals will drop on Friday, September 12. NetEase has prepared lots of new content, from a new hero to a Battle Pass with many new cosmetics. The game creator is also developing a loot box system, which was discovered by RivalsInfo on X.

The leaker found files that show that NetEase reintroduced the logic for so-called mysteries. “Mysteries” is a codename for loot boxes, the leaker claims, and these files contain several references to the logic of this system.

At the moment, it’s unknown when loot boxes will come to the game. The system seems to be still in development, as it’s not active in the early access version of the game. As previously revealed, the release date of Marvel Rivals Season 4 is Friday, September 12. Due to this, there is a chance that the new monetization system will arrive with Season 4.5 on October 10.

Earning loot boxes while playing the game would certainly be a decent idea, and we hope that this is what NetEase will implement. On the other hand, buying them seems like an unnecessary addition and could hurt the game.
