With Fallout Season 2 releasing later this year and Fallout 5 more-than-likely arriving after my very timely death, it’s up to the game franchise’s community to give me something new to play. While also still years away, Fallout: Bakersfield may be the next game on the horizon to keep me somewhat satiated.

A GZDOOM mod filled with stunning artwork by Alexander “Red888guns” Berezin, Fallout: Bakersfield is an incredibly exciting first-person game that recreates the look of the series’ classic entries with stunning FPS violence.

Berezin released a trailer for the FPS fan game earlier this year, teasing a release date of 2027 for the project. While I fully expected the creator to retreat into hibernation for at least a year, a new video has been released showing an extended gameplay demo of what fans can expect from the game when it finally releases.

The stunning 6-minute video shows Berezin exploring the jaw-droppingly stunning world of the original Fallout in first-person, moving in and out of interiors and fighting irradiated ghouls. With a number of weapons—a pistol, machine pistol, double-barrel shotgun, knife, machete and laser pistol—the fan game shows some incredible attention to detail.

Death animations in Fallout: Bakersfield are deliciously gory, pre-rendered animations with the laser pistol’s powerful energy beams melting Ghouls into puddles. Every frame of animation is lavishly detailed, and the GZDOOM project even manages to keep the in-frame text and HUD of the original games as well.

The gameplay footage even shows some of the RPG elements of the original Fallout games at work with the player somehow missing shots on a Necropolis Ghoul despite having a 94% chance to hit. At least they can follow it up with another quick shot. (Looking at you, XCOM!)

There has never been a game that looks just like this, and Berezin’s project is somehow even more impressive every time I see it. As someone who fell in love with the series via the old turn-based CRPGs but also loves the modern entries, this fan game scratches both itches in a very unique way.

It’ll still be a very long time until Fallout: Bakersfield is in our hands, but it looks absolutely sublime.
