It’s been 17 years since Valve released the original Left 4 Dead, and countless developers have attempted to recreate the formula of the co-op classic. However, it seems that original creator Mike Booth is working on a proper successor.
Speaking to fans on the Left 4 Dead subreddit, Booth teased his upcoming project as a return to the “foundations” of the series’ co-op gameplay. Unfortunately, the creator didn’t tell fans when the upcoming game will actually be revealed.
“I’m excited to share that I’m working on a brand new project —a 4-player co-op shooter built on the foundations of what made L4D special,” Booth told fans in the Reddit community.
Booth explained that the game is “still in the early stages of development”, but the game is already opening up playtests for potential fans to help shape the game over the course of its development. With the team behind the project actively looking for fans of the original game to help shape the spiritual successor, it already sounds promising.
“We’re opening up playtests to a limited number of players,” Booth told fans. “If you’re interested in joining us on this next adventure and helping shape the game early on, we’d love to have you involved.” You can sign up here.
In the post, Booth explained that the upcoming co-op game—which is probably zombie themed—will expand on the existing formula in “ways I’ve wanted to explore for a long time”. While Left 4 Dead 2 did see some expansion on the original formula, this comment is instantly exciting for fans of the long-absent co-op series.
It’s worth noting that this won’t be part of the Left 4 Dead series as Mike Booth no longer works at Valve. Instead, Booth is working at Bad Robot Games, a subsidiary of J.J. Abrams’ movie production company. Nevertheless, the upcoming spiritual successor is still exciting.
