Xbox’s brand-new Fable reboot has been in the works for a long time, and series creator Peter Molyneux has been quite supportive of the game. Early trailers of the game showed a quite different vibe to the originals with The Office-style cutaway gags and a harder traditional fairy tale lean.
In an interview with IGN at the start of this year, the Fable creator explained that the game’s reveal make them “tear up”. With the game nearing release, the iconic game designer has now explained that they’re excited to play the game “as a gamer” instead of as a developer for the first time.
“I end up playing whichever game I’m making hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of times,” the iconic game designer told PCGamesN in a new interview. “So, in one way, this version of Fable will be the first Fable I’ve really played as a gamer. And that’s going to be absolutely fascinating to play. I can’t wait.”
In the interview, Molyneux explained that they’ve always been “immensely proud that a game I loved to be involved with is continuing”, btu they were “a little bit worried about it” during it’s initial reveal. “It seemed a bit too fairytale-ish,” they explained.
While Fable has always been deeply tied to legends of folklore and fairytales, the initial trailer was very fairytale-focused. It was a much different vibe, although still tied to the British humour and snark that the originals did so well, and recent gameplay videos have excited Molyneux..
“I’m very encouraged by their latest gameplay videos,” Molyneux said. “They’re keeping a lot of what made Fable different and special. Still curious about the alignment system, and how that visually affects the world, but I’m going to be first in the line to play it; I can assure you of that.”
Fable’s gameplay has been shown to be a direct evolution of what Lionhead was doing during the Xbox 360 era. The game still revolved around NPC interactions and giving players a place in the world, although to a much deeper degree than its predecessors.
Fable is still in the final stages of development with the upcoming RPG not slated to release until February 2027. The RPG is set to be released on February 23, 2027 for PC, Xbox, and PlayStation 5. A port of the game to Nintendo Switch 2 is reportedly “in consideration”, but there’s been no official word on that yet.
